Rita Charles, a single mother of a preteen son, hates her job and is resentful of her boss. She can't quit, however, because she is just scraping by and can't rely on her ex for child support. Adding to the complications is her recent romantic involvement with a co-worker, which she is trying to hide from her employer.
If she didn't have enough problems, Rita decides to play a practical joke on her boss. But the joke goes terribly wrong. When violent crimes become rampant in her town, she fears she will become implicated.
This is the first Rita Charles novel.

For me, the question in POISONED! How to Ruin a Life.. is: who is this Rita Charles and how can she possibly manage her life and recover after what happens in the first chapter? Rita is not an model heroine; however, as the story goes on, she does display the commitment to keep on going and be responsible for her life. Her decisions are not always wise: she tries to avoid things that will cause her inconvenience while still attempting to meet her obligations to family, friend and job. Can she pull it off?The story is told day by day, and reflects how tough it is to get one's needs met while juggling traffic, hostile co-workers, guilt and obnoxious neighbors. What I liked best was Rita's take on modern life, and how she kept doing she had to.
Some other themes are: food and it's pervasive influence; female friendship - its importance and fragility; the benefits and conflicts that come with an intimate romantic relationship, especially when it might not be long-lasting. All in all - lots of food for thought, and I look forward to finding out how she continues to attempt to shape her life.

POISONED! How to Ruin a Life edition by Diane Diamond Eileen Opie Feldman Brittany App Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Well written, witty and funny, a page turner.
Captures single motherhood and dating to a tee.
I recommend it!
Never did I dillydally reading Poisoned! If we're lucky, Diane is already writing the next novel so all of us learn what the future holds for Rita.
Mystery, intrigue, romance...this novel has it all - a real page-turner! Many readers will easily relate to Rita Charles' efforts to juggle her responsibilities to her career with the demands of being a single mother, all while trying to fulfill her own needs. Excellent!
Poisoned! How to Ruin A Life is an intelligent and engaging mystery novel written with a good sprinkling of humor. It pulled me in from the start. Rita Charles, the main character, is someone I have grown fond of. The novel's humorous tone nicely offsets the main character's foibles and real life challenges. I delighted in her friendships and family relationships and found it easy to get caught up in her world, so much so I just couldn't put the book down at times. I look forward to future Rita Charles books.
When I first picked up Poisoned! How to Ruin a Life, I thought I'd be reading a light-hearted murder mystery. Instead, I found it to be an astute social commentary from the never-ending balancing act of a working single mother to our food-focused culture to the many injustices found in every-day life.
Diamond has crafted an insightful, contemporary tale with just the right amounts of humor, intelligence and indignation. It was also refreshing to read a novel where the adult child and her parents all have healthy, non-dysfunctional relationships with each other. Rita Charles and her "Whack-A-Mole" life will charm your heart and hold your interest from beginning to end
Many American woman of a certain age will easily relate to main character Rita Charles' frustration at finding herself stuck in a basic dead-end job with no hope of upward mobility, subservient to a man who delegates much of his work and responsibilities to her, without thanks, recognition, praise, or even a decent living wage, imagining instead that calling her an "administrative assistant" is just and sufficient compensation for her hard work, long hours, education, and loyalty. In spite of her frustration, Rita Charles and the author never become mean spirited or preachy. POISONED! How to Ruin a Life is so well written with such an abundance of intelligence, style, and gentle wit that I find myself reading passages over and over again simply for the enjoyment factor. Many congratulations to the author on this first Rita Charles novel, and I look forward to reading many more in the future!
